This basic hydraulics (hydraulics 1) course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to understand hydraulic principles, components, symbols and circuit diagrams.
Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:
- Hydraulic actuators
- Hydraulic pumps
- Hydraulic control valves
- Hydraulic pressure control valves
- Appropriate calculations
- Fault finding
Training and assessment are conducted at Site Skills Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.
Please be advised that this unit of competency was superseded by MEM18020 Maintain hydraulic system components in June 2019. Site Skills Training will continue to train and assess the superseded unit of competency until the transition end date of 31 December 2022.

This course is suitable for those with mechanical and/or electrical trade backgrounds that are seeking to improve their skills and knowledge of hydraulic systems.
Participants must be able to provide a Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency as a pre-requisite for undertaking this course:
MEM09002B | Interpret technical drawing |
MEM12023A | Perform engineering measurements |
MEM18001C | Use hand tools |
MEM18002B | Use power tools/hand held operations |
MEM18003C | Use tools for precision work |
MEM18006C | Repair and fit engineering components |
MEM18055B | Dismantle, replace and assemble engineering components |
A moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.
All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:
- Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
- Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
- Long work pants
Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.
Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency will be issued:
