This confined spaces, permit to work and gas test atmospheres course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to safely and competently enter and work in confined spaces, working in accordance with an issued permit, and conduct gas testing of atmospheres prior to entry of a work area or space.
Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:
- Legislations, standards and procedures
- Hazard identification and risk management procedures
- Definitions and types of confined spaces
- Hazardous atmospheres including gas monitoring techniques
- Isolation, purging, ventilation, permits and authority
- Types and scopes of permit
- Types of tests or inspections
- Preparing for and working under a permi
- Types and selection of gas detector
- Sampling regimes and technique
- Inspections and maintenanc
- Calibration and bump tests
- Gas types, characteristics and toxicity
- Lower and upper explosive limits
As this course covers three (3) units of competency, please note that classes may not run consecutively.
Training and assessment is conducted at Site Skills Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.

This course is suitable for those who are required to enter and work in confined spaces, and are required to work in accordance with an issued permit, and undertake gas testing of atmospheres. It is suitable for those working in maintenance or engineering maintenance, on the servicing of vessels, or any other non-process work performed on plant.
A basic to moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.
All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:
- Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
- Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
- Long work pants
Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.
Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency will be issued:
