Overview

This Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas course offers participants the opportunity to attain nationally recognised competencies that meet the requirements of AS/NZS 4761 Competencies for working with electrical equipment for hazardous areas (EEHA). This course provides a licensed electrical worker with the specialised skills and knowledge required to perform installation, maintenance, testing and inspection of electrical equipment in explosive atmospheres.

The Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas course covers the following topics in detail:

  • Equipment installation requirements
  • Legal requirements and Australian Standards
  • Principles of hazardous areas classification
  • Procedures for breakdowns and maintenance
  • Testing procedures
  • Visual inspection
  • Detailed inspection
  • Record keeping
  • Access and permit procedures for use in hazardous areas
  • Explosion-protection techniques

Practical activities are conducted on training boards that have been developed in conjunction with NHP Electrical Engineering Products, a leading supplier of electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres.

Entry Requirements

Participants must be able to provide a Testamur and Record of Results for at least one (1) of the following qualification as a pre-requisite for undertaking this qualification:

UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
UEE31220 Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control

A moderate to advanced English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is recommended. Participants will undertake a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment prior to enrolment to identify any educational support needs.

 

Personal Protective Equipment

All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:

  • Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
  • Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
  • Long work pants

Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency will be issued:

UEECD0011 Comply with scheduled and preventative maintenance program processes
UEECO0002 Maintain documentation
UEEHA0001 Conduct detailed inspection of electrical installations for hazardous areas
UEEHA0002 Conduct visual and close inspection of electrical installations for hazardous areas
UEEHA0003 Determine the explosion-protection requirements to meet a specified classified hazardous area
UEEHA0004 Enter a classified hazardous area to undertake work related to electrical equipment
UEEHA0005 Install explosion-protected equipment and associated apparatus and wiring systems
UEEHA0006 Maintain equipment associated with hazardous areas

 

This course also provides pre-learning for the following IECEx units:

Ex 000 Basic knowledge and awareness to enter a site that includes a classified hazardous area
Ex 001 Apply basic principles of protection in explosive atmospheres
Ex 003 Install explosion-protected equipment and wiring systems
Ex 004 Maintain equipment in explosive atmospheres
Ex 006 Test electrical installations in or associated with explosive atmospheres
Ex 007 Perform visual and close inspection of electrical installations in or associated with explosive atmospheres
Ex 008 Perform detailed inspection of electrical installations in or associated with explosive atmospheres

 

Qualification Pathways

  • Hazardous Areas Classification and Design
    • The Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas provides a Licensed Electrician with the necessary pre-requisites to enrol into the Hazardous Areas Classification and Design course with Competency Training.
  • UEE42620 Certificate IV in Hazardous Areas – Electrical
    • On successful attainment of all units within Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas, participants who hold UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician or an Unrestricted Electrical Licence can enrol into the UEE42620 Certificate IV in Hazardous Areras – Electrical qualification with Competency Training, and complete the remaining four (4) core units through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
  • Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas (Refresher)
    • In accordance with the AS/NZS 60079.14 requirement for continuing education, it is recommended that the Installation and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas competencies are refreshed every 2-3 years.
