This excavator and skid steer course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to operate a civil construction excavator and skid steer loader (also known as a bobcat).
Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:
- Conducting pre-operational checks
- Bulk excavation
- Backfilling
- Trench extraction
- Stockpiling
- Battering and benching
- Stripping/spreading topsoil and materials
- Lifting, carrying and placing materials
- Selecting, removing and fitting atatchments
- Basic machine operator maintenance
- Relocating machines
As this course covers two (2) units of competency, please note that classes may not run consecutively.
Training and assessment is conducted at Site Skills Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.

This course is suitable for those working in site based roles who are required to use an excavator to lift, carry and place materials and a skid steer loader to load, haul and distribute materials. It is not suitable for those who need to independently load and unload equipment. For those who need to do so, completion of RIIHAN308F Load and unload plant (or equivalent) is recommended in conjunction with this course.
A basic to moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.
All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:
- Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
- Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
- Long work pants
Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.
Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency will be issued:
