This fell trees manually (basic) course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to assess and fell basic trees manually using a chainsaw, and to complete routine operator chainsaw maintenance.
Trees that are applicable to this course include those that do not have an excessive lean, no visible damage or defects, uniform in structure, not prone to free splitting, non-complex multi stems, and/or small or medium diameter.
Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:
- Identifying hazards and risks
- Features of basic trees, defects and characteristics
- Types, purposes and methods of cuts
- Basic maintenance of a chainsaw
- Environmental protection measures
Training and assessment is conducted at Site Skills Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.
- Dates
The course is suitable for those who use a chainsaw to fell basic trees as part of arboriculture, forestry, agriculture, conservation and land management, local government, emergency services and other government agency operations. It is not suitable for commercial harvesting opreations.
A basic to moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.
All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:
- Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
- Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
- Long work pants
Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.
Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency will be issued:
