This basic welding course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to undertake basic welding using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW or TIG), gas metal arc welding (GMAW or MIG) and manual metal arc welding (MMAW or stick).
Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:
- Identifying risks associated with welding
- Implementing correct hazard reduction practices
- Safely applying welding practices
- Identifying material properties
- Selecting correct welding processes to achieve a safe and effective weld
- Welding processes such as:
- Gas tungsten arc welding
- Gas metal arc welding
- Manual metal arc welding
- Simple welds in the flat or down position
Training and assessment are conducted at Site Skills Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.
Please be advised that this unit of competency within this package were superseded in June 2019. Site Skills Training will continue to train and assess the superseded unit of competency until the transition end date of 31 December 2022.

This course is suitable for those seeking to enter the welding industry with entry-level welding practices.
A basic to moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.
All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:
- Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
- Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
- Long work pants
Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.
Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency will be issued:
