This ICAM Lead Investigator course includes the theoretical and practical components to meet the skills and knowledge required to plan, conduct and report on investigations of work health and safety incidents that have resulted in, or have the potential to result in injury or damage.

Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Reduce the risk of expensive litigation and criminal proceedings
  • Establish the importance of correct methods of conducting an enquiry
  • Determining what went wrong, why, and how to ensure it does not happen again
  • Supervising incident investigations and managing an investigfation

Training and assessment is conducted at Site Skills Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities.


This course is suitable for those who might be involved in an incident investigation team, including supervisors, safety representatives, managers, safety officers, union officials and inspectors.

A moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.

All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:

  • Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
  • Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
  • Long work pants

Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.

Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following units of competency will be issued:

BSBWHS515 Lead initial response to and investigate WHS incidents
RIIWHS301E Conduct safety and health investigations
