Overview

This prepare to work safely in the construction industry course includes the theoretical and practical components for mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. Anyone who intends to work in the construction industry is required to complete this unit of competency as a pre-requisite to receiving a General Construction Induction Card (also known as Construction Induction Card or White Card depending on your state or territory).

Participants will gain the following skills and knowledge:

  • Common hazards
  • Roles, responsibilities and obligations
  • Safe work practices
  • Risk management principles
  • Safety signage
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Legislative requirements

Training and assessment must be conducted face-to-face at Site Skills Training facilities. Upon arrangement, training and assessment can be conducted at the premises of industry clients providing there are suitable industry training facilities, and must be conducted via face-to-face delivery.

This unit is required for anyone who wishes to work on or enter any active work site in Infrastructure, Resources and Construction. Persons working in a ‘construction’ trade position whether full-time or contracting are required to hold a white card and have it in their possession on site. This course is mandatory for those intended for a worksite within Australia.

Queensland participants must be able to meet the Workplace Health and Safety (WHSQ) Evidence of Identity (EOI) requirements. Northern Territory participants must be able to provide photo identification to meet the NT WorkSafe identity requirements.

A basic to moderate English language, literacy and numeracy skill level is required.

All participants are required to wear the following minimum PPE to enter our facilities:

  • Fully enclosed shoes (steel-capped boots preferred)
  • Long-sleeve shirt with high visibility
  • Long work pants

Additional PPE may be required depending on the course requirements.

Recognition of Prior Learning

There is no recognition of prior learning for this unit.

 

 

 

 

Upon successful completion of this course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency will be issued:

Queensland Participants

Site Skills Training holds a current agreement with Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) to issue General Construction Induction Training (GCIT) cards as legislated by s.325 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Qld). Participants must meet the WHSQ Evidence of Identity (EOI) requirements prior to being issued with a GCIT card.

Northern Territory Participants

Site Skills Training holds a current approval with NT WorkSafe to deliver General Construction Induction Training (GCIT) in the Northern Territory. Participants are required to lodge an application for a GCIT card with the Territory Business Centre within sixty (60) days of their Statement of Attainment being issued. An application fee is payable at the time of lodgement to NT WorkSafe.
